The mandolin is one of the most important Portuguese folk instruments. Tuned like the violin but with double courses, it has its own family, the best known members being the bandola, the bandoleta and the bandoloncelo.
There are many variants: Neapolitan, Milanese, Brescian, Roman, Brazilian, A- or F-style (USA) and Portuguese. Great composers such as Vivaldi, Beethoven and Prokofiev wrote for this instrument, which once filled the houses and palaces of the nobility and bourgeoisie.
The most common build configurations are:
| Top | Basswood, Spruce |
| Back and sides | Mahogany, Cedar |
| Neck | Poplar, Mahogany, Cedar |
| Fingerboard | Panga Panga, Rosewood, Ebony |
| Tuning mechanism | Portuguese fan tuners, machine heads |
Every instrument is set up in our workshop for its player. Get in touch or visit us at Rua de Santana, 37, Porto.
