The Cavaquinho is probably the most played traditional instrument in Portugal. Originally from the Minho region, it is part of every folk ensemble in the north of the country.
It has 4 courses of strings, with many possible tunings, and a flat fingerboard flush with the top, which makes the strumming technique (“rasgado”) easier.
The most common build configurations are:
| Top | Basswood, Spruce, Spruce/Rosewood (split tops) |
| Back and sides | Walnut, Sycamore, Cherry, Rosewood |
| Neck | Basswood, Poplar, Mahogany, Cedar |
| Fingerboard | Panga Panga, Rosewood, Ebony |
| Tuning mechanism | Wooden pegs, machine heads, Portuguese fan tuners |
Every instrument is set up in our workshop for its player. Get in touch or visit us at Rua de Santana, 37, Porto.
