The Raj\u00e3o is the most popular instrument of Madeira’s folklore. Its tuning resembles the classical guitar in its first 5 strings (bottom to top).<\/p>\n

Some musicologists argue that the Raj\u00e3o comes from the French Viola, which is highly likely given the similarities in shape and tuning. It is\u00a0a very versatile instrument with a very characteristic sound.<\/p>\n

This instrument, which is approximately 70 cm long, was carried by the madeiran to Hawaii, giving the Ukulele.<\/p>\n
